Johann Schreber’s Die Säguthiere

These fine mammal prints are from the work entitled Die Säugethiere in Abblidungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen by Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber. They are uncut from the original parts. The author studied the natural world extensively, including medicine, natural science, and botany, which he learned from Carol Linneaus. Schreber bagan this important multi-volume work in 1774 and it was published from 1778-1781. Many of the mammals were given binomial scientfic names following Linnean taxonomy for the first time in this work. They are on chain-linked paper that measures ~7 3/4″ by 10 1/2″.
